Hidden Costs and Crazy Notifications?

Everything in the App aside from the limited selection of recipes is .99 cents; so that was kinda disappointing. Another thing thats strange is I get crazy amounts of notifications? Like a balloon will appear over the app with a number like 853 or even in the thousands sometimes, although when you click on the app... Theres nothing?
